Northbound Interstate 65 (I-65) is closed because bridge bearings have fallen and a bridge pier has sunk nine inches possibly due to a combination of the contractor’s construction work to widen I-65 to six lanes and creek water pooling. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is concerned similar closures may occur on other bridges due to lack of funding for maintenance and rehabilitation of Indiana’s 5,600 state bridges, 350 of which are currently in poor condition.
