The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) suspects work done by contractors to widen northbound Interstate 65 (I-65) to six lanes may have led to bridge bearings falling out just days before a bridge pier sank nine inches due to possible underground water feature damage. The northbound I-65 bridge near Lafayette is closed until further notice and highway officials have implemented a 52-mile detour to keep heavy traffic off city streets.
