California water agencies are pursuing the use of treated wastewater for human consumption. Currently, treated wastewater is pumped into aquifers to be further filtered naturally. However, water agencies are conducting feasibility studies and developing the process to combine treated wastewater with groundwater for immediate consumption. The City of El Paso, Texas has used this process since 2013 and have found the treated wastewater to be of better quality than the lake water it is mixed with.
