A twin cable-stayed bridge being built to replace the current Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson River that took decades to get approved by government officials. Construction began in 2013 as a design-build project. The replacement is expected to open in 2018 at a cost of at least $4 billion.

A group of environmentalists have filed a lawsuit against the state of New York over plans to borrow funds from the state’s clean water program to provide a $511 million loan to the Tappan Zee Replacement Bridge project. The environmentalists are concerned that this funding plan could set a dangerous national precedent if it is allowed to proceed. In September, the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced they would only authorize $29 million from the clean water program for the bridge project and the state may appeal the EPA’s decision.

The Left Coast Lifter (West Coast Lifter), one of the world’s largest cranes, was custom built to rebuild a portion of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. American Bridge/Fluor, the bridge contractors, arranged through a contract provision that they would be able to keep the massive floating crane free of charge after its use on the Bay Bridge project. It’s now reported that American Bridge/Fluor has leased the crane for an undisclosed amount to Tappan Zee Constructors, the private consortium building the Tappan Zee Replacement Bridge.

The Left Coast Lifter, one of the world’s largest floating cranes, has arrived at the Tappan Zee replacement bridge construction site. The Left Coast Lifter was used on the rebuild of a portion of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge that was damaged after an earthquake. It’s estimated that the use of this crane on construction will save taxpayers $1 billion.
