The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) plans to rebuild a 25-mile stretch of Interstate 66 (I-66) along the Capital Beltway so it would have three regular lanes and two high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes in each direction. Construction would being in 2017 with completion expected by 2021. However, a “preferred alternative” for the highway and funding for the project are still to be determined. According to the project’s website, it is estimated to cost $3 billion and would likely be done through a public-private partnership (P3).
