While Caltrans engineers say there’s no immediate concern about the bridge failing, a recent underwater survey spotted pits — pockets of accelerated corrosion — on welds that bind massive piles that hold up the foundation.

Metro defends track inspections, radio signal system in aftermath of derailment

The Washington Post » Rust was found on the steel rail that fractured in a Red Line derailment near Farragut North last week, but the cracked rail that probably caused the crash would have been imperceptible to track walkers and ultrasonic inspection technology, Metro officials said Thursday. Agency investigators are awaiting the results of metallurgy testing by outside experts, which are expected next month and may give a clearer indication about what caused the eight-foot section of track to crack at the start of the morning rush on Jan. 15.

With LBJ East ready for a green flag, state transportation officials throw up stop sign

I-16 widening and I-16/I-95 improvement projects moving forward

WJCL » The State Transportation Board passed a joint resolution between the Georgia Department of Transportation and the State Road and Tollway Authority to move forward with the Interstate 16 road widening and interchange reconstruction projects at I-16 and I-95. The projects are part of the Department’s Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP), and are currently in the procurement phase.
