Rate of bridge improvement is slowing across the U.S.

Roads & Bridges » The pace of improving the nation’s inventory of structurally deficient bridges slowed this past year. At current pace of repair or replacement, it would take 37 years to remedy all of them, said Dr. Alison Primo Black, chief economist for ARTBA. According to an analysis of the U.S. DOT’s just released 2017 National Bridge Inventory database, 54,259 of the nation’s bridges are rated structurally deficient.

The proposal calls for an increase in the state’s gasoline tax by 7 cents per gallon, phased in over four years, according to sources who have been briefed on the plan.

Judge rejects bid to suspend Louisiana pipeline construction

The Associated Press » A federal judge refused Tuesday to order a temporary halt to construction of a crude oil pipeline through a river swamp in south Louisiana, a setback for environmental groups challenging the project. Environmental groups sued the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Jan. 11. The lawsuit accuses the Corps of violating the Clean Water Act and other environmental laws when it approved a permit for the Bayou Bridge pipeline project in December.

N.Y. adds $250 million to bridge rehab program

Better Roads » The state of New York plans to infuse an additional $250 million into rehabilitating and replacing worn-out bridges and culverts. The Bridge NY program began in 2016 with an initial $200 million. The program provides grants to municipalities in the state. It has led to more than 125 bridge and culvert projects being funded, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
