New York drinking water panel: Removing 1,4-dioxane will be costly

Newsday » The state Drinking Water Quality Council, charged with recommending a safe standard for the chemical 1,4-dioxane, estimated Monday that removing the emerging contaminant could cost water suppliers in New York billions of dollars in capital spending and millions more each year to operate and maintain treatment systems. The panel also discussed two other pollutants that are also not currently regulated federally.

760-mph Hyperloop transit system considers Detroit-Chicago route

MLive » A California-based company is in talks with Michigan transportation officials to consider whether Detroit could be a potential stop for a futuristic transportation system. Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) is looking to create a high-speed tube-based transportation system from Cleveland to Chicago that would theoretically reach speeds up to 760 miles per hour.

Could tolls pay for road repair? Probably not, MnDOT says

Governor Brown signs dam inspection bill prompted by Oroville scare

The Sacramento Bee » Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation that would tighten dam inspection standards following last year’s near catastrophe at Oroville Dam. On Monday, Brown signed Assembly Bill 1270. The bill codifies practices that state dam officials already were largely doing, but that the state’s Water Code only required they perform “from time to time.”

Energy Transfer Partners appeals revocation of Louisiana pipeline permit

Reuters » An Energy Transfer Partners subsidiary on Monday appealed a ruling by a federal judge in Louisiana that halted construction on a portion of its Bayou Bridge crude oil pipeline, according to court documents. The motion came after U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick on Friday issued a preliminary injunction revoking a needed permit for the pipeline, which is already under construction.
