A flyover under construction collapsed onto a busy city street in Kolkata, India, killing 27 people. The contract for the flyover was awarded in 2007 to IVRCL, a private contractor which had been blacklisted at least twice. Government officials claim they previously requested information about the project, but the contractor was slow to respond. As a result of the collapse, IVRCL’s offices have been sealed, three of its employees have been arrested for criminal negligence, two government officials have been suspended, and an investigation is underway.
